Taitung County is found in the southeastern region of Taiwan. It is located west of the Pacific Ocean, east of the Central Mountain Range, northeast of Kaohsiung and Pingtung Counties, and south of the Xiuguluan River and Hualien County. Taitung County is the third largest county in Taiwan by area, measuring 3,515.2526 km2 and accounting for 10% of the total area of Taiwan. Taitung County has a long and narrow coastline; with a total length of 176 km, the county's coastline is the longest in Taiwan. The county also features mountains, rift valleys, lakes, hot springs, and two outlying islands (Lanyu and Lyudao), providing a wealth of tourism resources.
Taitung County's administrative regions comprise one city and 15 townships: Taitung City, Chenggong Township, Guanshan Township, Changbin Township, Haiduan Township, Chishang Township, Donghe Township, Luye Township, Yanping Township, Beinan Township, Jinfong Township, Taimali Township, Dawu Township, Daren Township, Lyudao Township, and Lanyu Township.
Traveling between Taitung Airport and Taitung City takes only 11 minutes by car.
Taitung County has three airports: Taitung Airport, Lyudao Airport, and Lanyu Airport (the Lyudao and Lanyu Airports are small-scale airports).
Taitung Airport mainly offers domestic flights, but is also a destination for cross-strait charter flights approved by the Taiwanese government. Chartered flights to/from Hong Kong, Dalian, and Guizhou are available. Domestic flights include Taitung City–Taipei (50 min), Taitung City–Lyudao, and Taitung City–Lanyu.
Taitung Station is only 10 minutes away from Taitung City downtown area by car.
Hualien–Taitung Line: The Hualien–Taitung Line is an important rail line connecting Hualien and Taitung Counties. The Hualien–Taitung Line was converted to electric trains in June 2014, which has enabled trips between Taitung and Hualien via the Puyuma Express to take as little as 2 hours, and trips between Taitung and Taipei to take as little as 3.5 hours (a reduction of approximately 2.5 hours).
South-Link Line: The conversion to electric trains along this line, scheduled for completion in December 2020, will reduce travel time between Taitung and Kaohsiung from 2.5 hours to as little as 90 minutes.
Taitung County’s highways are divided into the mountain line and the coast line. Highways connected to regions outside of the county include the South-Link Highway, the Southern Cross-Island Highway, and the Suhua Highway, all of which run in the north–south direction.
The major provincial highways/county roads in Taitung County include Provincial Highways 9, 11, 20, 23, and County Road 197.
Highway widening projects for the South-Link Highway and Provincial Highway 9 began in 2012, and are scheduled for completion in 2017. Upon completion, travel times between Taitung City and Kaohsiung City will be decreased to 2 hours.
Taitung Bus Station underwent relocation and reconstruction officially reopening for operation on June 19, 2015. It offers eight pick up/drop off zones for passengers. The station accommodates 39 routes and a total of 337 daily bus trips. In addition, it supports intercity bus lines between Huatung Valley, the East Coast, the South-Link regions, Hualien County, and Taitung County. Furthermore, it collaborates with Fugang Fishing Port, Taitung Airport, and Taiwan Railways Taitung Station, in which air freight, ocean freight, railway, highway, and urban transportation can be joined together into a seamless network.
Fugang Fishing Port is only 17 minutes away by car from Taitung Metropolitan Area.
There are three ocean freight routes: Fugang Fishing Port–Lyudao Nanliao Fishery Harbor (50 min), Fugang Fishery Harbor–Lanyu Kaiyuan Fishery Harbor (120 min), and Houbihu, Kenting–Lanyu Kaiyuan Fishery Harbor (150 min).
There are 14 fishery harbors in the outlying islands. Among them, the Fugang Fishing Port is considered the most important, and is classified as a Second Category fishery harbor. It is currently a terminal for both fishing and transport vessels, as well as for tourist vessels.
Since 2016, efforts have been made towards the planning, design, and renovation of the Fugang Fishery Harbor. The planning, design, and renovations are scheduled to be completed in December 2020. Upon completion, the passenger embarkment area, fishing vessel berths, and cargo ship unloading areas will be separated to avoid any potential disturbance. These renovations will help the harbor to meet fishing and commercial needs.
