Keelung City is located at the northernmost part of Taiwan. Originally, the city was called "Jilung," meaning hencoop, but was later renamed "Keelung," short for a phrase meaning "place of prosperity."
The city is 132.7589 km2 in size, and has been a major deep water port since ancient times.
Keelung City has seven administrative areas, which comprise Zhongzheng District, Xinyi District, Ren'ai District, Zhongshan District, Anle District, Nuannuan District, and Qidu District. Of these districts, Qidu District is the largest and accounts for 42.38% of the city’s area. In contrast, Ren'ai District is the smallest. Each administrative area has its own advantages in traditional industries and environmental resources. In addition, the city has seven islands, of which the more well-known are the Heping Island, the Keelung Islet, and the Pengjia Islet.
Built as a harbor for ocean freight, Keelung City has long been known for its prosperity and its good geographical location. Keelung City plays a key role in Northern Taiwan's ocean freight, and is the commercial port with the most competitive advantages in Taiwan. Keelung is unrivaled in terms of its historical achievements and value. In recent years, trade between Taiwan and China has increased in frequency. When costs are taken into account, Keelung City becomes the best choice for a commercial port for many Taiwanese and Chinese companies because of its short shipping distance to China. Thus, Keelung’s port business has prospered. Keelung City has an advantageous natural environment and has convenient transportation to Taiwan's capital of Taipei. Keelung City is also the port of call for large international cruise liners visiting Taiwan. These aspects have turned the entire Keelung port and city area into an international city. The outlook for Keelung City's future prosperity is very bright.
Keelung City is located at the most northern point of Taiwan. It is surrounded by mountains on three sides and faces the ocean on the remaining side. This area is a natural port with many advantages. Since the olden days, the port and city have served as an important part of Taiwan's commercial and economic development. Its role has been as important as the capital of Taipei, the nation's gateway of Taoyuan, and the technology focused Hsinchu Science Park. Keelung City is the first choice for international shipping. The facilities not only allow large corporations to ship their cargo smoothly, they can also significantly reduce the transportation costs in business operations.
Keelung Port's long history of development has led to the creation of a comprehensive port business management system. Because the port is continually loading and unloading cargo, the facilities must undergo constant renovation. This port's efficiency is the highest in Taiwan. Keelung City is a key transportation hub in the China and Asia region. Keelung City intends to show its strength in international shipping and become an important transfer station in Asia.
In recent years, trade with China has become more frequent. To leverage China's emerging market, many major businesses are actively setting up plans to establish themselves in China. The Port of Keelung has the advantage of being a very short distance from China by ocean freight. Not only has Keelung become a location of choice for Chinese tourists visiting Taiwan, the city also aspires to become a harbor city that is "Foremost in Asia, connect to the world" by serving as a springboard for enterprises seeking to enter the China market.
In addition to its natural port advantages, the hard work of the government and its residents has also paid off in other ways. The Keelung City Government has endeavored to fulfill the reasonable needs of businesses, offer incentives for enterprises, and provide the most appropriate investment environment. These are the best and most helpful things that a city can give enterprises to expand their business, and serve as the source of economic activity for creating a lively port city with unlimited innovation.
Freeways 1 and 3 all start in Keelung City, and there are multiple provincial highways and local roadways that connect to various parts of Taiwan.
The north–south railway starts in the north at Keelung City. The northern starting point of the eastern railway route also starts from the city's suburb of Badu.
Keelung Port is in the center of the city. It is a natural port with an advantageous geographical location, and is the main cargo port of northern Taiwan.
Keelung City is only 30 minutes away from Songshan Airport and less than an hour from Taoyuan International Airport.
In recent years the government has promoted related updates and renovations to improve the city’s economic infrastructure, such as transportation, shipping, environment, and ecology. The objective is to achieve rapid improvements and create a port with more comprehensive services. The city is actively promoting modernization in construction, such offering widespread Internet access, updating the cityscape, digital daily life, and striving to keep up with international standards. Urban renewal is also being promoted to reduce land waste. Keelung City is keeping up with global trends and leading the way in international trade, so that Keelung City can always be at the top of global advancement and enjoy business opportunities.
