Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim said Jan. 11 that the government is sparing no effort in developing artificial intelligence and related technological applications to ensure a more competitive future for Taiwan’s next generations.
According to the vice president, the policy goal will be achieved through expanded collaboration among the academic, business and public sectors. In this way, AI will help drive Taiwan’s economic growth and overall industrial advancement while the country transforms into a smart AI hub, she said.
Hsiao made the remarks during a summit on cultivating AI professionals in Taipei City as part of a job fair organized by two private sector entities.
Given Taiwan’s hardware development prowess, rich talent pool and powerful semiconductor sector, the country stands ready to play a key role in the global AI supply chain, the vice president said. It is important to incorporate AI into all businesses and sectors so the technology can benefit all segments of society, she added.
Equally important, Hsiao said AI should be applied to address needs and boost innovation in other areas such as education, medical care, net-zero carbon emission and transportation. To this end, the government and many private sector organizations have mapped out AI-learning plans to ensure that students at all levels can develop the skills they need.
The vice president said the rapid development of AI is changing the world by creating novel business models and spurring job opportunities while also posing new challenges. Taiwan needs to stay alert and keep abreast of global trends as it establishes itself as a global center for AI innovation and talent cultivation, she concluded.
