Superior human resources and a high degree of dedication of its people are Taiwan's most significant advantages in global competition.

Plowing Deep in Taiwan, Integrating Research, Development, and Production

DuPont Taiwan was formed in 1968. In the beginning it was a marketing office, with responsibility for the promotion of DuPont's products and providing technical support to customers. Today, DuPont Taiwan has close to 1,000 employees and annual revenue in excess of US$700 million. It operates 3 manufacturing plants, 5 joint-venture enterprises, and 5 major enterprise groups that cover such product areas as hi-tech fibers, plant protection products, personal safety, special chemicals, security consulting management, non-woven fabric, titanium technology, fluoride products, electronics technology, packaging materials, construction plastics, and high-molecular, high-efficiency coating materials.

Taiwan Ranks 3rd Globally in Terms of Investments Received from DuPont

Over a period of more than 30 years DuPont has invested over US$1 billion in Taiwan, making it the island's largest foreign investor. Taiwan also ranks third globally in terms of investments received from DuPont, surpassed only by the United States and the UK. DuPont believes that the Asia Pacific region will be the center of global business activities in the future, and has chosen Taiwan as the location for its Asia Pacific Operations Center. The island has a wealth of talent, and Taiwanese workers are dedicated and hard-working; this is one of the major factors which has helped DuPont to achieve higher than anticipated returns on its investments in Taiwan, which in turn has encouraged the company to invest even more in the island. In line with the company's global research and development strategy and its mission to bring even better products and services to customers, DuPont has also set up technical support centers and research labs in Taiwan to integrate research and development with production and continue its pursuit of making high-value-added products.

Superior Human Resources -- The Prime Factor Leading to Success

Multinational Enterprise's Localization

DuPont has been actively implementing a policy of localization in its Taiwan operations, and Taiwanese have been recruited to fill many high level management positions in the Asia Pacific region. Joint cooperative efforts are also underway with many of Taiwan's academic institutions, leading to the establishment of R&D and technical support centers on the island. DuPont's performance in Taiwan has been superior to that in many other areas where DuPont has invested. The main reason is that Taiwan has a wealth of first-class managerial and technical personnel. These individuals possess such qualities as conscientiousness and dedication, and DuPont has been able to utilize this local talent to the full to create maximum value in its products.

Highly-Recognized Human Resources

In Taiwan, the number of people going on to graduate study is very large; more than 20,000 people earn a master's or Ph.D. degree every year. In addition, many Taiwanese who have attended graduate school overseas subsequently return to Taiwan to work. Switzerland's Business Environment Risk Intelligence (BERI) has published a report on Labor Force Evaluation, in which Taiwan is rated number 3 globally along with Belgium and the United States, based on such rating indices as labor laws, relative productivity, labor force work attitude, and skill level. In another report, titled Global Competitiveness Report for 2002~2003, Switzerland's World Economic Forum (WEF) ranked Taiwan number 2 in the industrial technology index. In 2000, the number of US patents awarded to Taiwanese ranked the 4th highest worldwide, behind only the United States, Japan, and Germany. It is clear that the quality of Taiwan's human resources in terms of productivity, skill levels, creativity, attitude toward work, and other areas has been recognized all over the world.

Abundant Experience in Global Operations

In the era of the knowledge economy, high quality human resources are the prime factor contributing to the success of an enterprise. Taiwan's managers have accumulated a wealth of experience in international operations, experience which they can integrate with the strategies of transnational corporations in the development of the global market as a whole.
