Certification boosts Taiwan's IT services industry output, which could surpass NTD 300 billion this year

April 4, 2008

As a number of Taiwan's IT service and software companies have been receiving Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) certification, the industry will likely surpass NTD 300 billion in output, according to Executive Yuan Minister-without-Portfolio Lin Ferng-ching.

This is a visible result of government efforts to help promote IT service development and improve the quality of software manufacturers in Taiwan, said Lin.

CMMI's certification is recognized internationally as a set of quality benchmarks for software development and project management, said Lin.

The Industrial Development Bureau (IDB), under the Ministry of Economic Affairs, started to help Taiwanese companies undergo CMMI three years ago, and to date has helped 74 companies pass CMMI appraisal. Among these companies are Syscom and Mitac, which are currently in active negotiations to cooperate with Japanese companies and are expecting higher output in software sales in the future.

CMMI certification has five 'maturity levels'. Three Taiwanese organizations have reached this level: IBM Taiwan's global services division, the Chung Shan Institute of Science and Technology IT Management Center, and Syscom.

Having already assisted companies in obtaining certification, government organizations are now taking the next step of obtaining certification for their software technology and management capabilities, said Lin.

The certifications will help the government better understand the development technology and quality of manufacturers, and ultimately help in cooperating with these companies to the benefit of all parties, he said.
