Nantou County proposing plans for new science and precision machinery parks

January 18, 2008

The Nantou County Government is planning to build a science park and a precision machinery park in two of its townships and villages, according to Nantou County officials.

The science park would be located in the Mingwen Township while the precision machinery park would be located in Jhushan Village. The two parks could create up to 50,000 job opportunities and a yearly industry output value of NTD 400 billion, said Nantou County Magistrate Lee Chao-ching.

The new parks would seek to become one of the Central Taiwan Science Park's (CTSP) 'fourth phase' satellite parks. The CTSP is no longer able to provide any more factory land, which compelled Nantou County to draw up its own plans to fill in this gap, according to Lee. The Nantou County Government has already submitted its plans to the CTSP administration.

Professor Liang Jeng-jong of Fengchia University, who is in charge of the planning for the parks, says they have already started the process of recruiting companies. Liang said that the Parks seek to not only bring in high-tech companies, but also green, non-polluting technology companies that cover the areas of software engineering design, biotechnology, TFT solar panels, precision machinery technologies, and silicon chips.

The Nantou County Government is aiming in particular to attract companies involved in green energy, TFT solar panels, LED, and the telecommunications industries for the science park. In the precision machinery realm, they are seeking to attract companies specializing in computerized tool machinery, optoelectronics, and special printing machine tools, as well as special products for automobiles.

Liang said that the precision machinery is a future industry of focus for Taiwan, and Central Taiwan has always served as an important production area. Currently, a precision machinery innovation park operated by Taichung City does not have enough land, and the Nantou County Government's plans provide a quick solution, he said.
