The Institute for the Information Industry (III) has announced that it will launch a joint venture with Fujitsu of Japan in March 2008 to develop a new-generation, high-speed WiMAX chip.
A total of
USD 5 million will be invested in the joint venture, according to the Central News Agency. Fujitsu will hold 51% share and III a 49% share, with management and executive staff to be decided at a later date.
The joint venture will develop a WiMAX chip that offers rapid data transfer speeds, utilizing Fujitsu's technology to meet the needs of Taiwanese manufacturers. This is expected to provide Taiwanese manufacturers with a head start on mass production in the global market.
The III-Fujitsu WiMAX chip is expected to allow for wireless data transfers speeds comparable to optic cables, and provide high-quality images for video communications in mobile phones.
Both III and Fujitsu say that they expect the joint venture to help with the overall development of Taiwan's WiMAX industry, as well as to promote the rapid growth of WiMAX worldwide.
The joint venture will develop all the application software platforms required by WiMAX for Taiwan manufacturers, while providing the technology needed to bring competitive WiMAX devices into mass production.
