World Recycling Company (WRC), a US company specializing in metals recycling, held an opening ceremony for its new plant in Kaohsiung on November 7.
WRC CEO Peter Halpin visited Taiwan to participate in the opening ceremony, which was also attended by over 120 people representing the Kaohsiung County Government, the Environmental Protection Administration, the Industrial Development Bureau, the Department of Investment Services, and various industries in Taiwan.
Halpin said that the new plant marked an important milestone for WRC's development in Asia, and added that in the future, not only would the plant provide professional services to Taiwan customers, it would also contribute to the company's recycling operations throughout Southeast Asia.
Founded in 1976, WRC is headquartered in McLean, Virginia. The company specializes in recycling wastewater sludge from electroplating, and using the materials to produce metal concentrate for sale to metals producers.
WRC operates three plants located in Arizona, Pennsylvania and Germany. WRC provides recycling resource services to 31 countries around the world, using advanced environmental processing technology.
The seeds for WRC's investment in Taiwan were planted in 2002, when the company invested in a scrap metal processing plant in Taiwan. Several visits to Taiwan by the company's representatives eventually led to the formation of this project.
WRC's plant began construction in August 2006. The plant is located at the Environmental Science Technology Park within the grounds of the Kanshan Benchou Industrial Park in Kaohsiung County. WRC's facilities cover approximately 2,000 ping (approx. 6,611 square meters), and the company currently employs 30 people. Output from WRC's Taiwan operations will be exclusively for export.
A representative from the Environmental Science and Technology Park noted that WRC is the first US company to be approved to enter the park. The representative said that it is hoped that WRC can provide high quality services in the realm of environmental recycling, and work with Taiwan to improve its investment environment and competitiveness, so as to attract even more foreign investment.
