DHL to establish gateway in Southern Taiwan

August 24, 2007

To respond to growing demand by companies at the Southern Taiwan Science Park, DHL Taiwan plans to establish a service gateway at Kaohsiung International Airport by the end of the year, according to a company spokesperson.

The new gateway would eliminate the need for transporting goods and cargo to Northern Taiwan before export and raise efficiency, said Chen Suo-feng, general manager of DHL Taiwan's transport services.

DHL currently operates a service gateway at the Taoyuan International Airport, and 10 additional service stations across the island, including the cities Taipei, Hsinchu, Taoyuan, and Chiayi. Since the launch of the Taiwan High Speed Rail earlier this year, domestic air flights throughout Western Taiwan have seen a significant decrease, particularly in Chiayi.

This reduction in flights could result in delays for precision machinery and electronics companies, whose products for export currently must be first be sent to Taoyuan first to clear customs. Thus, DHL hopes its new Kaohsiung service gateway will be able to eliminate the need for goods to be sent to Taoyuan.

This would allow DHL to directly serve its local customers and raise efficiency, Chen said.

DHL, which sponsors the Chunghwa Baseball Team, also announced that it has offered to send all of Chunghwa Baseball team's equipment for its trip to the Netherlands and Italy for a competition, free of charge.
