Council of Agriculture promotes agriculture biotechnology park

August 6, 2007

The Council of Agriculture (COA) touted the Pingtung Agricultural Biotechnology Park (PABP) as a platform for development and cooperative exchanges at Bio Taiwan 2007, one of the region's prominent biotechnology conferences, which convened at the end of July.

At the conference, the COA also promoted its business strategy of bringing in Japanese investors to work with Taiwan companies in developing the Asian market, said a United Daily News report.

The PABP Planning Office has invited six Japanese agriculture and biotechnology firms and ten Taiwanese companies to enter the new park, in order to develop a platform for exchanges, while helping Taiwanese companies develop the overseas markets.

According to Pingtung Agricultural Biotechnology Park (PABP) director Chen Jian-bin, some of agricultural and biotechnology achievements on display at Bio Taiwan 2007 included new breeds of grain and special use crops; new breeds of fruits, vegetables, and flowers; a protected species of the butterfly orchid; bio-organic fertilizers; biological agents for veterinary use; functional foods and medical cosmetics; and testing and diagnosis technologies.

The Japanese companies participating in the exhibition included spin-off companies from Waseda University, Keio University, and Tohoku University. These companies offer outstanding research achievements, which have led to some of the companies being listed on Japan's stock market, said Chen.

The COA noted that Taiwan and Japan's resources compliment each other -- Taiwan's agricultural technologies are geared toward agricultural development in tropical climates, while Japan holds more experience in temperate climates, and is very advanced in its overall biotechnology development.

Through mutual exchanges between Taiwan and Japan, the Agricultural Science Park companies and the Taiwan agricultural and biotechnology world will able to expand their international view, while helping Taiwan's agricultural and biotechnology companies navigate the overseas market and build a global commercial exchange network, said the council.
