Taiwan DRAM memory manufacturers cornering the global market

August 2, 2007

Taiwan DRAM (dynamic random access memory) manufacturers continue to grow, as they took a 37% global market share in 2006, according to a report by market intelligence group DRAMeXchange.

Taiwan companies comprised 9 of the top 20 memory manufacturers around the world in 2006, said the report. On the average, one of every three computers worldwide uses DRAM memory manufactured by a Taiwanese company.

Global DRAM sales totaled USD 6.3 billion in 2006, according to the Economic Daily News.

Market analysts say that Taiwan memory vendors' impressive market growth is attributed to their growing production capacity, as well as their increasing attention on the Mainland Chinese market and brand development.

Taiwan's top DRAM vendor is A-Data Technology, the world's second largest vendor of memory modules. A-Data, which posted sales earnings of USD 631 million in 2006, has started to see rapid growth in the market for memory servers, and is now concentrating on the mainland China and emerging markets. Revenues for its brand surpassed the US's No. 2 memory manufacturer, Smart Modular, by USD 200 million.

Transcend, an up-and-coming memory vendor, is closing in on A-DATA, having grown by 12.48% in June over the previous month with earnings of NTD 3.416 billion. Transcend, which generally sells more flash memory, will likely replace A-Data has the nation's largest memory vendor, as the flash memory market is likely to overtake the DRAM market. Transcend has been working to establish a marketing network in mainland China, and has added 8 SMT production lines. As a result, the company leaped from its 9th place position in 2005 to 4th place last year.

Acer's own brand Apacer, which has seen strong sales for server memory, rose in ranking from 14th last year to 6th place. Other companies such as TwinMOS and Geil have retained their positions in the top ten. TwinMOS' recent merger with a Chinese company has brought large scale revenue growth, as the company reached 9th place.

Geil has also shown a dazzling performance, as sales of its DDRII overclocking products sales have been strong, bringing the company to 10th place.
