Thanks to fruitful results from Taiwan R&D, nanotechnology could create Taiwan's next economic miracle: Taiwan President

July 18, 2007

With its abundance of industrial resources and technological strength, Taiwan is highly suited to develop and innovate in the field of nanotechnology, and could create a "green economic miracle" for Taiwan, said President Chen Shui-bian.

President Chen made the remarks at the opening ceremony of the Taiwan Nano Exhibition 2007, the second largest showcase for nanotechnology in Asia.

President Chen remarked that the National Science and Technology Program for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology -- a government program for industrial development -- has produced fruitful results.

Under the government's nanotechnology program, now in its fifth year, Taiwan researchers published a total of 3,745 articles for international publications and journals, and comprise some of the world's top nanotechnology research teams, said President Chen. To date, Taiwan has obtained 310 overseas patents and 39 domestic patents, and under the program, has seen 232 cases of technology transfer and 184 cases of advanced technology transfers, worth approximately NTD 170 million. 175 companies are engaged in nanotechnology investment, worth a total of over NTD 3.96 billion to date.

These achievements show that Taiwan has indeed been recognized for its efforts internationally, said President Chen.

Other officials attending the ceremony included National Science Council Chair Chen Chien-jen, Minister-without-Portfolio Lin Ferng-ching, conference host and Academia Sinica research fellow Wu Maw-Kuen, and Minister of Economic Affairs Steve Chen, who presented a number awards for creative applications in nanotechnology and an industry excellence award.
