Taiwan's optoelectronics industry output now surpasses that of South Korea, said Chen Chao-yi, director-general of the Industrial Development Bureau (IDB) in the opening speech of the Photonics Festival Taiwan 2007.
In 2006, Taiwan's optoelectronics industry output reached
NTD 1.27 trillion, also surpassing South Korea for global market share, said Chen.
National Science Council Deputy Minister Tai Chien, who also gave a speech at the event, touted the success of Taiwan's optoelectronics industry in Southern Taiwan, where the Southern Taiwan Science Park has shown a production output of
NTD 450 billion to date.
Tai also noted that the optoelectronics chain is very long, suggesting that the industry could create more jobs in Taiwan.
The global market for optoelectronics in 2007 has surpassed
USD 315.6 billion, increasing 8%, said festival organizers. Taiwan's optoelectronics industry production value is expected to reach NT$1.46 trillion this year, and account for 14% of the global market, they said.
Taiwan also holds a secure position among the world's top three places for LED packaging, STN/TFT-LCD panels, optical disk machines and optical disks, digital cameras and OLED, said the organizers.
