MOEA reports on Q1 investment in Taiwan, seeks investors for Kaohsiung Software Science Park

June 25, 2007

The Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) convened a meeting for agencies to report on Taiwan investment in Q1. At the meeting, Minister of Economic Affairs Steve Chen called for more investment in solar photovoltaic materials, as well as for more investors for the Kaohsiung Software Science Park.

The MOEA reiterated its private investment target of NTD 1.65 trillion for expanding investment in Taiwan in 2007. The new target marks an 11.44% increase over last year.

At the meeting, it was reported that, as of the end of April, 476 newly-added major investment projects totaled NTD 539.7 billion, or 53.63% of the target set by the ministry.

Chen, who presided over the meeting, requested that all agencies strengthen their efforts to recruit investment, and to focus on bringing more investment to the solar photovoltaic industry, particularly for the upstream production of amorphous silicon, a material used in emerging solar battery technologies.

The MOEA is currently developing and seeking investors for the Kaohsiung Software Science-based Industrial Park, particularly in the areas of IT software, digital content, IT services, electronics and telecom R&D and other support services. A number of incentive measures are being offered to help companies reduce costs -- these include reduced land rent rates and subsidies offered by the Kaohsiung City government for interest financing, rent, and real estate taxes.

In addition, the MOEA Water Resources Agency reported that it is also promoting the deep sea water resources as an emerging industry, and will offer subsidies of NTD 150 million to local city and county governments for development.
