Sony considers flat panels storage and distribution center in Taiwan

May 25, 2007

Japan electronics giant Sony is considering building a storage and distribution center for its flat panel display procurement in Taiwan, according to Minister of Economic Affairs Steve Chen.

Chen said that Sony Executive Deputy President Ihara Katsumi mentioned the plans during his visit to Taipei earlier this month. Sony is currently looking at establishing the center in Central Taiwan, and the Ministry of Economic Affairs has offered its full support, said Chen.

Sony announced earlier this month that it expects to purchase 4 million units from Taiwan flat panel manufacturers. Chen noted that Sony has always been an important procurement partner for Taiwan, and will be making purchases of up to USD 6.8 billion this year.

Katsumi told Chen that the new center would serve to make the supply chain operations "even smoother" in Taiwan, according to the Economic Daily News.
