May 17, 2007

With the continued growth of the global economy and steady markets in China and Europe, Taiwan's export orders posted a record high of USD 28.03 billion in March, growing 12.4%.

According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), a number of sectors showed record amounts for export orders, including IT and communications, basic metals, plastics, and machinery.

IT and telecommunications products showed the highest growth, increasing by USD 1.31 billion, a 24.59% year-on-year increase, thanks to strong notebook and desktop computer sales.

Electronics grew by USD 620 million, an 11.08% increase, thanks to strong demand for consumer electronics and computer memory, as well as increased OEM orders with Taiwan companies from major companies abroad.

Hong Kong and Mainland China placed the highest number of orders in March, placing USD 7.15 billion in orders, a year-on-year increase of 20.99%. The US followed with orders totaling USD 6.97 billion, a 3.61% year-on-year increase.

Export orders from Jan. to Mar. this year have totaled USD 75.8 billion, a 12.73% year-on-year increase over last year.

An MOEA survey showed that 27.16% of manufacturers expect order volume to increase next month, while 50.46% expect orders to remain the same, and 22.38% expect a decline. The number of manufacturers expecting an increase grew by 4.78 percentage points.
