The Industrial Technology and Research Institute (
ITRI) inaugurated the Flexible Electronics Pilot Lab in mid-March. The institute is expected to invest approximately
NTD 300 million in Taiwan's first lab devoted to flexible electronics.
The lab will offer comprehensive resources for flexible electronics
R&D, ranging from synthesizing materials and developing production processes to product design and pilot production. The new lab will be open to international cooperation, and companies both in and outside of Taiwan are negotiating pilot production projects, according to
ITRI.
Flexible electronics are seen as the next leading industry to follow in the footsteps of the semiconductor and LCD-TFT industries, given the potential applications and low manufacturing costs.
The future business prospects for flexible electronics are quite favorable, said
ITRI President Johnsee Lee.
ITRI's lab, built with support from the Ministry of Economic Affairs, will offer a faster time-to-market for products and lower risks in product development, he said.
The
ITRI lab has already developed a production process for 25-centimeter wide photolithography, and three processes for ink jet printing and screen printing.
