New electronics testing standards to take effect in July

The Ministry of Economic Affairs Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection (BSMI) has announced new testing standards for electronic products that will take effect July 1, 2007.

According to the BSMI, a new version of current electronics testing standards for product inspection will be released to cover 128 electronic and IT-category products, including stereo, personal music devices, computers, and LCD screens. Specific areas of testing for revised standards include electromagnetic compatibility and electric safety.

As the public is using more electronics and IT products, the need for safety requirements has increased, said a bureau official. The new standards are bring implemented in order to bring ROC manufacturers on track with international trends and to make progress in improving consumer rights, said the official.

The new standards will also be implemented in accordance with the standards of the International Electrotechnical Commission, said the BSMI.

In the new standards will separately two sets of Chinese National Standards, a standards body overseen by BSMI, which cover electromagnetic and electric safety regulations: CNS 13439 (Audio and Television Broadcast Receivers and Related Equipment -- Radio Frequency Interference - Limits and Measurement Methods/ 2004 Version) and CNS 14408 (Video and Similar Electronic Products - Safety Regulations / 2004 Version).
