Taiwan is stepping into the international rice market with an award-winning organic rice from Taitung in Southern Taiwan.
The exported rice, named "Chihshan" rice, was developed and grown by the Taitung District Agricultural Research and Extention Station (TDARES), an agricultural research organization under the cabinet-level Council of Agricultural Affairs. The rice variety has won numerous awards and is well-known throughout Taiwan.
So far this year, 180 tonnes of Chihshan rice have already been exported to Japan and has received much praise in the Japanese market, said an official at TDARES.
Chihshan rice is distinctive because it is grown in an ideal natural environment with a moderate climate, fertile soil, and high quality water for irrigation, and TDARES continues to improve its agricultural technologies for the planting and cultivation of rice, said the official.
