The National Science Council (NSC) is projecting that business volume from Taiwan's three science parks will break the
NTD 2 trillion mark in 2007, the cabinet-level group said recently.
Total business volume generated by Taiwan's three major science parks from Jan. to Oct. 2006 has grown by 31% over the previous year, said the NSC. Business volume from the Hsinchu Science Park (HSP), Central Taiwan Science Park (CTSP) and the Southern Taiwan Science Park (STSP) could reach
NTD 1.8 trillion in 2006, showing 28% growth.
Tai Chien, Deputy Minister of National Science Council, noted that from Jan to Oct. 06 alone, turnover from the three parks has already surpassed the entire amount generated in 2005. In particular, turnover at the newly developing Taichung Industrial Park has grown more than 3 times since last year.
The science parks also brought in 81 new investment projects in 2005, representing an 11% growth rate for new projects, said Tai.
There are 776 companies currently operating within the three science parks, with 475 at the HSP, 103 at the CTSP, and 198 at the STSP. 85 of these companies are foreign-invested companies.
The NSC is also planning to reduce company management fees at the science parks to 1.9/1000ths of business volume. The fees are currently 2/1000ths of business volume.
According to Tai, management fee reductions are now possible because many of the companies in the parks are focused more on design, and thus not do not use large amounts of water and electric power resources. Repayment of construction costs at the parks have reached a stable level, which has also allowed for lower fees.
The fee reductions will let companies and factories reduce costs and raise their competitiveness on the international stage, said Tai.
