IBM Taiwan and National Taiwan University (NTU) will cooperate on an project to develop RFID technology for medical care and retail sales applications, the two parties announced in early October.
The project will develop assets and inventory management solutions for the medical care and retail sales industries by integrating identification technology developed by NTU with IBM's administrative software technology.
RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) is an automatic identification technology used for storing and tracking data. The technology is currently used in passports, public transport and toll payments, and product inventory.
IBM said that this cooperative project would propel RFID applications into a new era.
This joint project compliments the government's development policies on RFID, said Xie Zu-rong, vice-president of IBM Taiwan's Greater China Software
R&D Center.
Working together, IBM and NTU will provide a viable solution in assets and inventory management for both the medical and retail industries, said Xie.
IBM's Greater China Software
R&D Center holds a wealth of developing technology and resources -- and looks to continue to industry-academia cooperation in Taiwan to develop solutions that meet customer needs, said Xie.
IBM hopes that its Greater China Software
R&D Center in the Taipei suburb of Nankang can become a world-class
R&D facility by 2010, according to Xie.
