Evergreen Aviation Technologies Corp (EGAT) yesterday unveiled the first of three modified cargo jets for Boeing. EGAT has converted a Boeing 747-400 passenger jet into a 747-400 large cargo freighter. At the unveiling Shih Yen-shiang, political vice minister of Ministry of Economic Affairs, said the conversion of the passenger jet to large cargo freighter is a very important milestone in Taiwan's aviation industry, as maintenance and modification technology has now attained world-class standards.
Three times the size of the original Boeing 747-400 jet, the converted cargo jet is said to carry a greater load than other freighters. The modified jet also has a swing-tail design that allows fast and easy loading and unloading. According to EGAT, the modified jets will significantly reduce cargo delivery times.
In February 2005 EGAT signed a deal with Boeing to convert three Boeing 747-400 passenger jets into 747-400 large cargo freighters, a first for the aviation industry. Modifications on the second jet will be completed by the end of the year; the third will be ready next year. The new cargo freighters will be used to transport large Boeing 787 Dreamliner parts to Boeing's assembly site in Everett, Washington.
