The fifth annual APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) Biotechnology Conference was held in Taipei from July 24 – July 27, as a lead-in to BioTaiwan 2006.
The annual APEC conference provides a forum that brings government, academia, and industry together to exchange information and experience in biotechnology.
The main theme for this year's conference was entitled "Building a Biotech Collaborative Network in the APEC Region” a topic featured in lectures by a number of guest speakers, which included Steve Burrill of the life sciences merchant bank Burrill and Company; Kevin Buchi of biopharmaceutical company Cephalon; and Dr. Lisa Grillone of ISTA Pharmaceuticals. The speakers discussed global trends in biotechnology and current business models, and additional meetings were arranged between domestic and foreign companies to discuss potential business opportunities.
Other companies represented at the conference included GeneCure and Paieon of the US; Clera of Canada, and Venturepharm from mainland China.
This year's conference was organized by the
MOEA Department of Industrial Technology, the Industrial Technology Research Institute (
ITRI), and the Taiwan Bio Industry Organization.
