2006 Taiwan Business Alliance Forum

The Ministry of Economic Affairs (
MOEA) is holding the 2006 Taiwan Business Alliance Forum at the Taipei International Conference Hall, which will start on Thursday, Oct. 12. On opening day, the conference will feature keynote lectures in the morning from top-level management representatives from Morgan Stanley and Cisco on the topic of corporate mergers and acquistions. In the afternoon, there will be discussion forums covering four different industries (financial services, logistics, medical electronics and broadband internet), which will be held in cooperation with the Financial Supervisory Commission, the
MOEA Commerce Department, the Industrial Technology and Research Institute (
ITRI) and Chunghwa Telecom.
The 2006 Taiwan Businsess Alliance Forum differs from past forums, which have been held since 2003. This year's forum will focus on continuing the substantial work carried out to bring more foreign investment to Taiwan over a one year period. The forum will also spotlight achievements of foreign investment in Taiwan and provide assistance to companies in seeking further investment opportunities. The
MOEA has asked the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) to choose and invite domestic and foreign businesses to attend the forum and examine the conditions and investment advantages of each country. The focus industries for the Forum are telecommunciations, financial services, logistics, electronic auto components, and biotechnology. A total of 15 small group discussion seminars will be held on various topics pertaining to investment in Taiwan. The Forum aims to find 100 potential investment projects and invite 30 foreign companies to examine Taiwan as an investment destination.
Current progress on bringing investment to Taiwan includes the following:
1. Investment Resources Development: Gathering resources on investment in the fields of telecommunications, logistics, electronic auto components, biotechnology, and finance from 75 companies from countries including the US, Japan, Australia, the UK, and Germany. Taiwan has already received commitments to invest from companies including Addonic Technologies of the US (telecom, Amicus Wireless Technology of the US (electronic auto components), and Motorscan SPA of Italy.
2. Arranging for companies to learn more about Taiwan investment: arrangements have already been made for further research and investigation by a number of foreign companies in the Forum's focus industries, including Dadango and Telamon Corporation of the US and Fiat of Italy, among 30 other countries from the US, Canada, Japan, the UK, France, and Italy.
3. Conferences on Investment for Small Domestic and Foreign Companies:
(1) Four Conferences have already taken place: in the latter part of May, discussion forums on the semiconductor and flat-panel industries were held in Japan and Korea. A total of 73 Korean and 39 Japanese companies attended. 11 Korean and 7 Japanese companies expressed an interest in investing in Taiwan. In the latter part of June, a discussion forum on business opportunities with Skype was held at Computex in Taipei. 180 people attended, and of these, 50 people representing foreign companies were added to the list of target companies for investment in Taiwan. Also in the latter part of June, an high-tech investment symposium was held in San Francisco, with representatives of 25 US companies attending. Of these, 1 company expressed interest in investing in Taiwan. These conferences focused on discussimg and facilitating investment from the above-mentioned companies.
(2) 11 conferences are currently being planned: from July to October, discussion forums will be held on the telecommunications, electronic auto components, financial services, logistics, and biotechnology industries in a number of countries, including the US, India, the UK, the Netherlands, France, Canada, Australia, Germany, and Japan. Plans are also underway to hold a high-tech investment conference in Dubai to attract more investment from the Middle East. Every conference will feature lectures from representatives of local trade offices and embassies, and domestic and foreign industry research organizations, and between 20-80 prospective investing companies.
By focusing on the development of investment resources for this year's conference, the
MOEA aims to ensure customized services for potential investors and help them gain a full understanding of related policies on investment in Taiwan, the industry situation and future development. In addition the conference can serve as a platform to help domestic and foreign companies to engage in investment, technical cooperation and negotiations on business opportunities.
In addition to foreign investment in Taiwan, the 2006 conference will equally emphasize the manufacturing industries and strategic services. Further information and details on the conference will be posted on the Invest in Taiwan site at the end of July. Registration will also begin at the end of July and will continue until one week before the start of the conference. At least 150 domestic companies and 50 foreign companies are expected to participate in the conference.
