The unemployment rate from Jan. to May this year was 3.84%, and the yearly jobless rate is expected to remain below 4%, according to the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting, and Statistics (DGBAS).
Huang Jiaan-jong, an official at DGBAS, said that given the current statistics pointing to stable growth in the labor market, DGBAS is optimistic that the unemployment rate for 2006 will remain below 4%.
Although the jobless rate rose slightly in May by 0.06 percentage points, a DGBAS official pointed out the increase is normal for this time of the year, as college graduates are just starting to enter the job market. Moreover, the rate is the lowest during this period than it has been for the past six years.
This past May also marked the seventh consecutive month that the unemployment rate has remained below 4%.
