Exports Hit a New Record Second Month in a Row

June 20, 2006

Fueled by strong global demand, Taiwan exports hit yet another new record high in May, according to figures from the Ministry of Finance (MOF).

Overseas sales reached USD 18.93 million, a 10.5% increase on last year, with machinery and high-tech exports growing 12.6% percent to USD 9.1 billion.

Year-on-year exports saw an increase of 12.2% in the first five months of 2006, totaling USD 87.91 billion. Exports to Hong Kong and the US, Taiwan's top export destinations, rose 16.9% and 11.8%, respectively.

The MOF also noted a trade surplus of over USD 6.5 million in the first five months, an increase of 77% over the same period one year ago.
