Nortel recently announced the founding of its Center of Excellence for WiMax Devices in Taiwan to develop end-to-end WiMax products and technology in cooperation with local makers.
WiMax, which stands for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a standards-based technology that provides wireless broadband access over long distances. The technology is being touted as a faster, cheaper alternative that provides better broadband access than current wireless standards.
Foxconn Electronics, Zyxel Communications, Mitac, and GemTek Technology have all expressed interest in working with Nortel, which has invested several hundred million New Taiwan Dollars in the project.
Products slated for development by the center include PCMIA cards, indoor and outdoor base stations and WiMax enabled PDA devices and mobile phones. Other projects include the Nortel Wireless Mesh Network solution, which is being carried out in Taipei and Kaohsiung as part of the government's M-Taiwan initiative.
In addition, Nortel is also working with National Taiwan University's Graduate Institute of Business Administration and Electrical Engineering Department on a WiMAX broadband service trial that will include interoperability testing for a range of wireless devices and multimedia applications.
