HP Taiwan announced yesterday that it has placed orders with Quanta to produce HP's new iPAQ 3G mobile phone, the company's latest venture into the smartphone market.
Unveiled in Taiwan in mid-May, the HP iPAQ mobile phone features quad-band GSM and Wi-Fi and multimedia entertainment capabilities, and includes Microsoft's Windows Mobile 5.0 Operating System and MSFP with Direct Push Mail.
According to reports, the third generation iPAQ will be divided into the 6800 and 6900 series, of which the 6800 will be manufactured by Quanta, and the 6900 series by HTC. Inventec has already formed a mobile phone division, and Compal's Compal Communications is also forging its position as a mobile phone OEM – further signs that Taiwan companies are anticipating more iPAQ orders.
