BERI: Taiwan Ranks 3rd in Asia for Business Environment

June 7, 2006

Business Environment Risk Intelligence (BERI) recently issued their first Business Risk Service Report for 2006, in which Taiwan received a Profit Opportunity Recommendation score of 72 and ranked 6th worldwide. Although Taiwan's global ranking fell one place from BERI's 2005 September report, it remained 3rd highest among Asian countries.

Taiwan has consistently received 1A ratings in past reports and this time was no different. BERI's 1A rating indicates that a country is a low-risk, suitable destination for investment. In the report, BERI noted that although the cross-strait situation has been tense, both sides have shown sufficient restraint and the risk of a military threat from China is gradually decreasing. The BERI report has forecasted that Taiwan's overall business environment scores will continue to improve, rising to 73 points after one year and 75 after five years, with its ranking climbing back up to 5th place.

Taiwan maintained its overall 3rd place ranking among Asian countries, trailing only Singapore and Japan in the Q1 2006 report, and its Operations Risk Index score remained the same from the previous year at 3rd place, behind Switzerland and Singapore. Taiwan outscored Japan in this category as its operations risk has shown continued, stable improvement.

Taiwan's Political Risk Index score and rank of 15th place remained the same from last report. Among Asian countries, it placed 3rd, behind only Singapore and Japan.

For BERI's Remittance and Repatriation Factor, Taiwan fell one place to rank 4th worldwide, although its score remains the same from last year.

BERI is a US-based, private organization that provides ratings, analyses, and forecasts on the economies of 140 countries worldwide. BERI issues its Business Risk Service report three times a year.
