Intel and National Science Council in Cooperative Deal

April 24, 2006

On April 10, Intel signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Science Council, with the two sides pledging to invest over NTD 200 million towards promoting cooperative projects between industry and academia. The new Intel-NSC project will cover areas including communications and digital medical technology, as well as the commercialization and marketing of product research.

The MOU was signed at the Intel Developer Forum by John Antone, general manager of Intel Asia-Pacific and NSC Minister Chen Chien-jen. Under the MOU, Intel will provide funding, equipment and software to assist the NSC in promoting industry-academia cooperation, and extend its already-existing cooperation with National Taiwan University, National Tsing Hua University, National Chiao Tung University, and National Chung Kung University.

The project will be implemented in several stages: in the first stage, Intel will select from a pool of cooperative research projects already receiving assistance from the company, and will help the selected companies form a team composed of industry and academic researchers to submit an application and project proposal to the NSC. In the second stage, NSC will review the cooperative projects and teams proposed and submitted by Intel. Approved projects will receive research subsidies from NSC, with Intel providing technical support.

The NSC is allotting approximately NTD 200 million for the project, and could add further subsidies of up to NTD 700 million, depending on the scale of the project. While Intel declined to reveal the amount it has invested, the company said that the project will be its biggest education-related investment in Taiwan in recent years.
