Taiwan Biotechnology Achievements Attracts Audience in US at BIO 2006, Present Opportunities for International Cooperation

April 21, 2006

A delegation of Taiwan biotechnology R&D leaders, company representatives, and government officers attended the BIO 2006 Annual International Convention in Chicago to display Taiwan's biotechnology achievements and present investment opportunities to international investors.

The convention was held by the Biotechnology Industry Organization, which is based in Washington D.C. and represents biotechnology companies, academic institutions and related organizations in the U.S. and all over the world.

The Taiwan delegation was led by Minister without Portfolio and technology advisor Dr. Ferng-ching Lin, who gave a talk introducing Taiwan's industrial development and government program assistance in biotechnology.
Academia Sinica Member David Ho and Development Center for Biotechnology Jui-lien Huang gave presentations on Taiwan biotech R&D achievements, including genetically modified orchid flowers and pollutant-reducing pesticides and fertilizers, as well as Taiwanese innovation and R&D in biomedicine and medical instruments.

Another member of the delegation introduced 'bio-clusters' that are currently developing in Taiwan, consisting of a network of biotech research campuses, science and technology parks, universities, and hospitals. A representative from Pingtung Agricultural Biotechnology Industrial Park extended an invitation for investors to come to southern Taiwan.

Products showcased by Taiwan companies included fermented soybeans from Microbio Technology, which in clinical tests have proven to be effective in treating cancer symptoms and boosting immunity; camphor-based health products from Weixiang Biotechnology; and a green tea hybrid currently popular in the US health food market from Sinphar.

To further promote opportunities for cooperation, the Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office in Chicago held a "Taiwan Night", which was attended by over 300 people representing government, the scientific community, and industry. Guests included Indiana State Senator John Waterman and Ohio Governor Bob Taft, who remarked in a speech at the event that he was watching Taiwan's technological progress and hoped for future bilateral cooperation.
