Sony, second only to Philips in the global consumer electronics market, plans to boost its procurements of LCD display panels in Taiwan this year due to its hot-selling BRAVIA LCD televisions. This will bring the Japanese company's total procurement value in Taiwan to
USD 6 billion in 2006. Sony is expected to produce over 5 million LCD television sets this year.
Sony has for years posted the highest annual procurement value among Japanese companies in Taiwan. Among all foreign enterprises in Taiwan, Sony ranked third for annual procurements in 2004, with a total procurement of
USD 5.2 billion. This marks a major increase from the
USD 300 million procurement value it posted in Taiwan in 2000.
In addition to LCD panels, Sony's procurements in Taiwan span a broad range of other products, including game consoles, personal computers, and parts and components.
Hewlett-Packard and Dell led all foreign enterprises in 2004, with total procurements of
USD 18 billion and
USD 8 billion respectively. Apple and IBM amassed the fourth and fifth largest procurement values in 2005.
In related news, Ryoji Chubachi, Sony's president and electronics CEO, will pay his first visit to Taiwan in early April in order to take part in the opening ceremony of Sony Fair @ Taiwan 2006, Sony's annual exhibition of its products from Taiwan.
