Alcatel to set up WiMAX testing center in Taiwan

April 3, 2006

It is reported that Alcatel plans to open a fourth-generation telecom WiMAX testing center in Taiwan. The French telecom company will first use the center to cooperate with Taiwanese wireless broadband equipment and solutions company ZyXEL on the development of wireless broadband services, while in the future its aims to take advantage of the center to strengthen cooperative relations with Taiwan's Internet telecom companies.

Alcatel's strengths lie in its ADSL technology, and the company works with Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry and ZyXEL on ADSL services. The telecom giant is also one of the top ADSL suppliers for Chunghwa Telecom. With WiMAX considered the coming successor to ADSL and also posing a challenge to 3G telecom, Alcatel has been investing heavily in the development of WiMAX technology. It is understood that Alcatel intends to invest in excess of NTD 100 million in its WiMAX testing center here.

Alcatel has already been conducting testing together with ZyXEL. The two partners have used ZyXEL's PCMCIA card to connect notebooks computers to the Internet through Alcatel's WiMAX base stations and network. This system has already been presented to global customers.

Alcatel has also cooperated with First International Telecom and Chung-shan Institute of Science and Technology on WiMAX testing. First International Telecom has applied to establish a WiMAX research park. It plans to erect 53 WiMAX base stations at an estimated cost of NTD 1 billion in Taipei City. Alcatel is one of the top suppliers for this project.

In addition to this newly-planned testing center, Alcatel has opened other development centers in Taiwan. It runs a third-generation telecom Internet research center called the 3G Reality Centre. The first stage of investment in this center has already required over USD 3 million. It has also invested over NTD 100 million in an information and telecommunications R&D center here.
