DuPont has this year begun working together with Formosa Taffeta to use the chemical maker's Nomex fiber for the manufacture of fire-retardant clothing. This cooperation plans marks DuPont's first move from the making and marketing of Nomex into the Nomex fabric and clothing market.
With its eyes on the nation's massive petrochemical industry, DuPont sees big potential in Taiwan and expects to sell 4,000 units of its fire-resistant protective clothing in Taiwan this year. Formosa Petrochemical Corp. and Taiwan Power Co. are its biggest customers in Taiwan for Nomex-made protective wear. Formosa Petrochemical alone accounts for about 80% of these sales. One Nomex fire-resistant suit cost about
NTD 4,500.
DuPont's Nomex fiber, on the market for over thirty years, is used to make heat- and flame-resistant clothing for such areas as firefighting, auto racing and electricity generation and is also used for electrical insulation. The fiber currently holds the largest global market for fire retardant materials. In Asia, not including China and Japan, Nomex has gained a 60-70% market share.
