Revenues from room stays at the 87 hotels in Taiwan classified as tourist hotels rose 12.8% on the year to
NTD16.2 billion in 2005, according to figures released by the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics in early February. International tourist hotels accounted for
NTD 14.7 billion of this total, while other tourist hotels brought in the remaining
NTD 1.461 billion.
In 2005, the number of rooms available at tourist hotels declined 1.4% on the year to 21,434 rooms, while the average occupancy rate rose 6.4% to 72%.
Establishments classified as legally-registered inns numbered 1,194 at the end of 2005, an increase of 58.4% compared to the end of 2004. Nantou County, one of Taiwan's most popular tourist destinations, was home to 270 such inns, more than any other area in Taiwan. Hualien County and Ilan County, both located on Taiwan's relatively less-developed east coast, had the second and third most, numbering 253 and 199 respectively. These three counties together accounted for over 60% of Taiwan's legally-registered inns.
