Taiwan's unemployment rate drops to 5-year low of 3.8% in January

February 28, 2006

Taiwan's unemployment rate dropped to 3.8% in January, the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics reported in late February. Not since March 2001 has the nation's percentage of unemployed people been this low. January was also the third consecutive month with unemployment under 4%.

The number of unemployed declined by 6,000 from December 2005 to 397,000 in January.

At 4.07%, the unemployment rate for people with no more than a high school education was the highest. For those with a vocational college or higher degree, the rate was 3.8%. However, those with only a junior high school education appear to have a better chance at finding employment as the unemployment rate for this group was the lowest at just 3.46%.

The unemployment rate for people aged 15 to 24 was, at 9.46%, the highest of any age group in January. The rate for those aged 25 to 44 was 3.67%, while it was just 2.41% for those aged 45 to 64.
