Female labor participation rate hits record high of 48.12% in 2005

February 15, 2006

In 2005, Taiwan's female labor participation rate hit a record high of 48.12%, while the rate for males fell to its lowest level ever at 67.62%, according to figures released by the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics at the end of January. These figures reflect a trend that has been emerging over the last decade.

Only as recently as 1995, the labor participation rate for men stood as high as 72.03%, over four percentage points higher than the current rate. In contrast, the rate for women has steadily climbed nearly three points from a rate of 45.34% in 1995.

As the economic situation in Taiwan improved over the last three years, the number of females with jobs grew faster than that for males. In this period, the number of employed males grew by 200,000, while the number of employed females increased by 280,000.

Taiwan's labor participation rate is the percentage of people fifteen years old and older that are employed.
