WEF: Taiwan's environmental performance 24th in world, fifth in Asia

February 8, 2006

In the Pilot 2006 Environmental Performance Index released at the World Economic Forum summit meeting in Davos, Switzerland at the end of January, Taiwan is ranked 24th globally and fifth in Asia among the 133 countries evaluated for the index.

In Asia, only New Zealand (which is also ranked first globally), Malaysia, Japan and Australia received higher rankings than Taiwan. Over the last decade, Taiwan has made great strides towards advancing environmental protection, from major improvements in air quality and waste management and reduction to the creation of nature conservation areas. It seems these efforts are paying off as Taiwan's global ranking places it ahead of such developed nations as the Netherlands (27th globally) and the United States (28th).

Among the six major categories in the report, Taiwan was ranked 15th globally for water resources, 31st for biodiversity and habitat, and 32nd for environmental health. While these three rankings are impressive, the nation fared relatively worse in the three other categories in the report. It received a ranking of 77th for sustainable energy, 92nd for air quality, and 129th for productive natural resources.
