The number of university graduates is steadily rising in Taiwan due to government efforts that have upgraded many vocational colleges to universities in recent years.
According to Council for Economic Planning and Development statistics, the percentage of Taiwanese 24 year olds with university degrees stood at 24.2% in 2000 and reached 30.9% in 2001. By 2004, this figure had risen to 48.3%. Forecasts for 2005 and 2006 place this figure at 50.5% and 53.2% respectively. The council sees the figure rising further to 81.9% by 2010.
