Carrefour, Wellcome's Jason's open new stores in southern Taiwan

December 27, 2005

Two of Taiwan's leading foreign retailers, Carrefour and Wellcome, opened new stores in southern Taiwan in early December. The opening of the new Carrefour flagship store in Tainan brings the number of stores run by the French retailer in the Tainan area to four, while Wellcome's new Jason's Market Place in Kaohsiung is the first high-end supermarket in the south part of the island.

Carrefour has invested a total of NTD 1 billion in its new Tainan flagship shopping center, which, covering over 4,000 ping (one ping is approximately 36 square feet), is the largest shopping center in Tainan County.

There are presently 37 Carrefour stores around Taiwan. However, after taking over Tesco stores in 2006, the retailer expects to be running a total of 49 stores. With its extensive network of stores and NTD 54 billion in annual revenues, Carrefour has a firm grasp on its position as the leading mega-retailer in Taiwan.

The new Jason's Market Place in Kaohsiung, the third Jason's in Taiwan, is located in the Han Shin Department Store and covers 400 ping. Wellcome expect the new store to account for 50% of the sales growth for the Jason's system in Taiwan by the end of 2006. The two existing stores are located in Taipei at the Taipei 101 Mall and Takashimayeh Mall in Tienmu.

Wellcome, with 165 stores around the island, is the largest supermarket chain in Taiwan. Within the coming two years, it plans to open two additional Jason's, probably in central Taiwan. The supermarket estimates that Taiwan has a capacity for ten Jason's.
