The personal video recording service TiVo of the United States has announced that it will begin offering its service to television viewers in Taiwan. To do so, the company's subsidiary TiVo Greater China (TGC) will team up with Taiwan's Synnex and Tatung, which will provide their established distribution networks, and PC Home, which will run online sales.
In addition to serving as a distributor, Tatung is also aiming to become one of the contract manufacturers for TiVo. Taiwan's Universal Microelectronics has already been contracted to manufacture set-top boxes for TiVo.
Tatung, a long-established home appliances company in Taiwan, has been making big moves into the digital home business in recent years.
TiVo, with 4 million users in the US, has been named one of the greatest digital living products of the last decade by Internet media authority CNET. The TiVo version to be released in Taiwan will allow for up to 160 hours of quality video recording.
