Intel signs WiMAX cooperation plan with MOEA

The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Intel Corporation of the United States signed a cooperation agreement in mid October to promote WiMAX wireless broadband technology and applications in Taiwan. The MOEA says it expects Taiwan to have 8 million wireless Internet users within five years and that this agreement with Intel will lead to the establishment of fifteen WiMAX demonstration zones in ten Taiwanese cities possibly as early as 2007.

The government's ultimate goal in promoting WiMAX networks and developing the nation's wireless network original design manufacturing market is to provide WiMAX-related products, equipment and solutions for the global telecommunications market. The MOEA sees this cooperation plan helping Taiwan expand from manufacturing to such areas as network installation and information services.

For its part, in addition to supplying Taiwan with WiMAX technology compliant with the IEEE 802.16 standard, Intel will share with Taiwan WiMAX field testing experience and models, assist Taiwan's ODM companies develop advanced WiMAX equipment and solutions, and ensure that Taiwanese products are compatible with the various telecommunications networks around the world.

The government is also investing NTD 37 billion from 2005 to 2008 in order to promote its M-Taiwan program which aims to boost mobile communications in Taiwan. WiMAX is the most essential aspect of this program. The government is also providing NTD 1.1 billion in subsidies to assist with the development of WiMAX platform technology and crucial parts and components.
