Taiwan has achieved some astoundingly high global market shares in a number of major information technology product categories, according to figures released by the Institute for Information Industry Market Intelligence Center in late October.
For instance, with Taiwan responsible for the production of an awesome 98.3% of the world's motherboards this year, up slightly from 96.5% in 2004, it looks like you know where to turn when you need to pick up a new MB. And, odds are Taiwan is behind the making of that sleek new notebook computer. Taiwanese NB account for 82.4% of the global market this year, a significant jump from 72.3% in 2004.
Here in Taiwan these days, they are calling these two champion products the "twin Bs."
And, as if that were not enough, Taiwan also makes most of the world's WLAN cards (89%), wireless access points (59%), customer premise equipment (75%), VOIP phones (77%) and internal VOIP phone routers (83%).
Compared to figures like these, Taiwan's impressive 46.9% of the global large-size LCD panel market may seem small. However, with Taiwanese flat panel makers continuing to expand production capacity, MIC forecasts this figure will grow to 49% in 2006.
MIC predicts that Taiwan's production value for information technology hardware (not including semiconductors) will grow 15% on the year to reach
USD 80 billion this year. NB are expected to make up
USD 30.2 billion of this total. The center also sees the nation's
IT hardware production value further increasing by 9.4% to
USD 87.5 billion in 2005.
