The Executive Yuan is providing
NTD 20 billion in subsidies from the Executive Yuan Development Fund over the next five years for the promotion of Taiwan's digital content, software and cultural/creative industries. In addition to these subsidies, the Industrial Development Bureau is also preparing to provide special financing for enterprises involved in the production of movies, television and digital content.
The specific areas these EY subsidies are intended to promote include: digital content software, digital audio-visual products, digital games, mobile application services, Internet services, computer animation, digital learning, digitalized publishing and archiving, cultural and artistic industries, motion picture and television industries, pop music industries, pictorial and literary publication industries, digital recreational and entertainment industries, and cultural/creative design industries.
As these subsidies are designed to encourage the overall development of creative industries in Taiwan, foreign investors that wish to film in Taiwan, employ Taiwanese actors and personnel and do postproduction here are also eligible to receive subsidies for 5-20% of their expenses.
While creative industries in Taiwan are still growing, the nation's creative potential can be seen in the works of film directors such as Ang Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and The Hulk) and Tsai Ming-liang. Lee, already a permanent fixture in Hollywood, recently won the coveted Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival for his gay cowboy romance Brokeback Mountain, while Tsai Ming-liang consistently brings home awards from independent film festivals around the world. At the same time, Taiwanese pop singers such as Ah-mei and Jay Chou find themselves worshipped throughout the ethnic-Chinese world and even in non-Chinese countries.
