The
MOEA Department of Industrial Technology approved the plans of 45 small and medium enterprises under its Small Business Innovation Research program in mid August. These businesses, from a range of sectors including electronics, information technology, machinery, chemical engineering, biological technology pharmaceuticals and services, will match combined SBIR subsidies of
NTD 70 million with
NTD 154 million in research and development investments of their own.
One of the SBIR plans approved this time is an auto navigation system being designed by Systems & Technology Corp. which specializes in e-mapping, GPS, GIS and auto security. Another is a special light sensitive dye developed by New Prismatic Enterprise Co., a company which supplies novel light and temperature sensitive color changing materials and nanotechnology materials.
The DOIT introduced its SBIR program in 1999 and, as of the end of July of this year, has approved subsidies for a total of 1,539 research projects. In this time the department has provided
NTD 3.32 billion in subsidies, which have been matched by investments of
NTD 7.08 billion from small and medium enterprises.
This program benefits Taiwan's international competitiveness by boosting the technological prowess of local SME and facilitating the upgrading of traditional industries.
