Japan's ULVAC Technologies in mid August signed a memorandum of understanding under which it will invest
NTD 1 billion to construct a 7.5 generation TFT-LCD equipment plant in the Tainan Science Park. The company says that the plant, which will occupy an area of five hectares, is scheduled to commence operations in the second or third quarter of 2006.
Reflecting the importance of this investment project to the government, Senior Adviser to the President Lin Hsin-yi and Minister of Economic Affairs Ho Mei-yueh personally attended the ceremony for the signing of the MOU between ULVAC and the Industrial Development Bureau.
ULVAC is the first foreign TFT-LCD equipment enterprise to set up a plant in Taiwan. The company says that it is open to working with local enterprises on the development of a new generation of equipment platforms.
ULVAC is one of the world's best known vacuum equipment manufacturers and is the only one to have expanded into every corner of the flat panel display industry. It says it has a 95% market share of the flat panel display equipment market in Taiwan.
The Tainan Science Park is the ideal location for the construction of an LCD equipment plant as it is home to all of Chi Mei Optoelectronics' TFT-LCD factories and HannStar Display's 5th and 6th generation plants.
In July, ULVAC invested over
NTD 2 billion to establish a research and development center in Hsinchu County. The company reports that this is its largest overseas investment ever.
Taiwan's TFT-LCD sector is expected to achieve an annual production value of
USD 30 billion this year. The sector's purchases of LCD equipment are predicted to surpass
USD 3 billion.
