Seven Taiwanese enterprises have recently received United States Department of Defense testing certification for a range of products including optoelectronic instruments, computers and body armor. These are the first local enterprises to receive such certification.
The seven certified companies and products are Acer Computer's flight control instruments, Hocheng Corp.'s body armor, Kontron Asia's military-use computers, Quarton Inc.'s laser sights and range finders, E-One Moli Energy Corp.'s lithium batteries, Wei Ching Technology's sensors, and EMMT System Corp.'s military walkie-talkies.
While in the past products made in Taiwan have been used by the US military, the role of Taiwan's manufacturers was that of supplier to US defense contractors. Now, having certified the products of Taiwanese enterprises, the US DOD is preparing to place orders for military procurements directly with Taiwanese companies. This development is not only an affirmation of the quality of Taiwanese products, it also highlights Taiwan's strategic importance.
US DOD technology and procurement personnel visited Taiwan twice in March and April. On these trips, they held supplier and technology meetings and met with suppliers at Taiwan's science parks and the Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology.
