Traditional Taiwanese tend to be more cautious during Ghost Month, which runs from August 5 to September 3 this year, because this is the month of the lunar calendar when the dead are said to return from hell to roam the Earth. To true believers, those that choose to engage in potentially dangerous activities such as swimming or air travel during Ghost Month are simply asking for trouble.
To put people's minds at ease, Taiwan's Central Insurance is offering Ghost Month insurance for under
NTD 200.
The insurer's basic Ghost Month insurance policy is injury insurance, but supplementary policies can be purchased as well. These include public transportation insurance, fire insurance and earthquake insurance. For instance, those that purchase
NTD 1 million in coverage could receive up to
NTD 10 million in compensation if injured in an airplane accident.
Central Insurance is known for devising innovative and localized insurance policies, including celebrity insurance and An Tai Sui insurance. According to the Chinese zodiac, people face a higher chance of running into misfortune during the year of the zodiac to which they belong. An Tai Sui refers to a protective temple ceremony that people are advised to have performed around the Lunar New Year as they enter the year of their zodiac sign.
