IDB allocating NTD 400 million to promote CMMI certification over four years

August 17, 2005

The Industrial Development Bureau will provide NTD 400 million to promote Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) certification among Taiwan's information technology services and software enterprises. The adoption of CMMI will help create more business opportunities for such companies by boosting the quality of software development.

CMMI combines software engineering, systems engineering, integrated products and procurement to design and improve all types of processes. CMMI has become an international standard for devising software development processes and is credited with helping India rise rapidly to become the world's second largest software exporter behind the United States.

In addition to providing guidance, the IDB says that as of 2008 the government plans to require that enterprises participating in major government information technology procurement projects possess CMMI certification.

The IDB reports that nineteen Taiwanese software enterprises have begun introducing CMMI and that fourteen of these have already earned certification. Among those with certification, seven hold Level 2 certification, two have Level 3 certification and one, IBM Taiwan, has already achieved Level 5 certification.

The IDB's CMMI plan calls for assisting 50 companies gain Level 3 certification by 2007. By 2008, the bureau aims to have helped 70 enterprises obtain Level 3 certification and five earn Level 5 certification.
