3M starts trial operation of new film plant in STSP

3M has completed construction of its new brightness enhancement film plant in the Southern Taiwan Science Park and commenced with trial operations in mid July. The proximity of this film plant to Taiwan's TFT-LCD manufacturers will shorten the time it requires to take a product from R&D to commercialization and will make Taiwan's flat panel display industrial cluster even more well-rounded.

3M is a major global supplier of brightness enhancement film to TFT-LCD manufacturers and has had operations in Taiwan for 35 years. The US company's new STSP plant is equipped with an advanced production line and has a technology support center. The plant is capable of producing 90,000 square meters of film each month, enough film to make around 1 million 17-inch flat panels. 3M aims to raise the plant's monthly production capacity to 200,000 square meters by 2006 and to 280,000 square meters by 2007.
